Cheongju City is actively promoting Jikji, the world's oldest extant book printed with metal movable type, through various initiatives, including the appointment of honorary ambassadors. On the morning of November 28th, a ceremony was held at the Cheongju's Temporary City Hall, where Mayor Lee Beom-seok officially appointed Carlos Gorito, a 38-year-old Brazilian TV personality, as a Jikji ambassador.

Carlos Gorito previously served as an educational advisor at the Brazilian Embassy in South Korea and gained popularity through appearances on several TV programs, including Non-Summit (JTBC). He is widely recognized as a prominent cultural advocate who has played a significant role in introducing Korean culture to Brazil.

Through Gorito's efforts, Cheongju City aims to increase interest in Korean cultural heritage across South America, where K-content is experiencing immense popularity, and effectively promote the global significance of Jikji.

During the ceremony, Mayor Lee stated, "Jikji is a precious cultural heritage not only for Korea but also for the world. It must be widely recognized and preserved for the benefit of humanity. Cheongju City has been organizing the Jikji Festival and the UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize to this end. I hope that, through Carlos Gorito's appointment as an honorary ambassador, our invaluable heritage, Jikji, will gain global recognition, particularly in South America, and its value will be shared worldwide."

Expressing his gratitude, Carlos Gorito said, "It is a great honor to take on the role of promoting Jikji inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World. I look forward to actively participating in efforts to raise awareness about Jikji in Brazil and across South America."

Ra Kyung-jun, head of the Academic Research Division at the Cheongju Early Printing Museum, who also attended the ceremony, remarked, "Amid the current global enthusiasm for K-content and the Korean Wave, interest in Jikji is steadily growing. We will continue leveraging domestic and international networks to globalize the value of Jikji to the fullest extent."

To date, Cheongju City has appointed a total of 22 domestic and international Jikji Ambassadors. Moving forward, the city plans to strengthen its promotional efforts by employing a two-track strategy focusing on "human resource enhancement" and "expanded ambassador roles." Additionally, a hotline for ambassadors will be established to enhance communication, along with increased support and specific role assignments, as part of a comprehensive campaign to promote Jikji.
