On January 7th, 2025, the world’s largest consumer electronics and information technology (IT) exhibition, “CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2025,” opened in Las Vegas, USA. This year’s exhibition is the largest ever, with more than 4,500 companies from 166 countries participating, underscoring how the era of artificial intelligence (AI), coexisting with humanity, is rapidly approaching.

Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, a leading figure in the AI revolution, delivered the keynote address on the opening day, revealing his ambition to expand the ultimate future of AI into "physical AI." Discussions followed on how AI could be utilized in physical fields of robotics and autonomous vehicles. However, significant technical barriers exist, such as the massive data processing requirements and the time and cost needed to conduct extensive tests.

To overcome these challenges, CEO Huang introduced an open AI platform called "Cosmos." He emphasized that utilizing Cosmos would significantly reduce the time and capital required for robot learning, predicting that this technology would accelerate AI innovation. His presentation drew more than 12,000 attendees from around the world, once again proving his influence.

At CES, SK Hynix's high-bandwidth memory (HBM) technology, which enhances the performance of NVIDIA's AI chips, also drew interest. SK hynix unveiled the world’s first 5th generation HBM (HBM3E) 16-layer product at CES, offering opportunities for AI chip innovation. Notably, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and CEO Huang announced their plans to strengthen collaboration in the AI field, drawing significant attention from the industry.

CES 2025 is essentially a battleground for technological innovation among the U.S., China, South Korea, Japan, and other major countries. Notably, South Korea’s Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics gained significant attention by showcasing innovative products that integrate AI and the Internet of Things (IoT). Samsung introduced a personalized AI residential solution, while LG emphasized the connectivity of AI and IoT devices with its mobile vehicle space platform.

The influence of Chinese companies has also noticeably increased. Companies like Hisense, TCL, BYD, and others have aggressively launched AI innovation products and strengthened collaborations with global giants like Microsoft and Google. China is seen to be ahead of South Korea in not only AI but also in electric vehicles, batteries, drones, and various future technologies, posing a tangible threat to South Korean companies.

However, South Korea still has significant strengths in advanced manufacturing industries like semiconductors, automobiles, and shipbuilding. To leverage these strengths, there is an urgent need for flexible regulation and a strengthened focus on research and development (R&D). In addition, legal and institutional support is critical for the future of advanced industries.
