Cho Se-hyuk becomes 1st champion in Wimbledon Tennis Tournament

The young South Korean tennis player Cho Se-hyuk has won the first champion of the boys’ 14 & under singles title at the Wimbledon tennis tournament, which was held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, England on July 11th.

 

The boy’s 14 & under division was newly created this year, separated from the junior division in which players under the age of 18 participate. Sixteen promising players from around the world were invited, and they were divided into four groups. The players ranking first place in each group could go to the next game in a tournament manner. Cho Se-hyuk, ranked 1,079th in the junior rankings of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), advanced to the finals by beating first seed Ivan Ivanov (484th, Bulgaria) in the semifinals after winning all three group matches. Cho defeated Carel Aubriel Ngounoue (576th, the United States) in straight sets, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, with very aggressive and active play in the final. The Korean player’s best performance in the Wimbledon junior category was Jeon Mi-ra of the women’s singles in 1994 and Jung Hyun of the men’s singles in 2013.

After the ceremony Cho said, “I had only imagined being at Wimbledon, and I was so happy to be invited, and winning the title has doubled my joy.” He added, “I’ll play in the junior grand slam next year and become one of the top 100 players in the world on the adult stage.” He is currently ranked as the No. 1 junior player in the Asian Tennis Federation.

 

Cho also became a champion in the Lavelle Mimosa Loire Atlantis Tennis Tournament as a part of the European Junior Tournament, which was held in La Voles-Cublak, Loire-Atlantic, France, on July 17th., beating Japan’s Davatariro in the men’s singles final. Cho is the No. 1 male player in Asia under the age of 14 and he is a young prospect on South Korea’s U-14 national team and has unlimited growth potential in the future. People felt grateful that such an excellent player has been born in the tennis world and think it would be good to look forward to the future of Korean tennis.
