A journey through time: Osaka of the past and present

We participated in an overseas advanced cultural experience program in the Osaka region of Japan last October. Stepping into Osaka Castle felt like stepping back in time, as the history I had once studied in world history class unfolded before my eyes. Built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Osaka Castle was a central hub during Japan’s Sengoku or Warring States period. The castle's structure was remarkably majestic, and its antique stone walls and towers showcased the traditional beauty of Japan. The layered moats showcased the advanced construction techniques and meticulous defense strategies of the era. Inside the restored castle, exhibitions about key battles and historical events provided deeper insights into the values that shaped Japan’s path from war to peace. Standing at the top of the castle, I marveled at the panoramic view of modern Osaka — a cityscape of skyscrapers and bustling streets. This vivid contrast between the historical and the contemporary offered a clear perspective on Japan’s remarkable transformation over the centuries.

In the evening, Dotonbori offered a strikingly different charm. The brilliant neon signs, uniquely charming billboards, and the inviting aroma of street food filled the area with vibrant energy and a sense of freedom. In particular, the sight of many people striking poses and taking photos in front of the Glico Man sign was a symbolic scene of Dotonbori. Trying street foods like takoyaki and okonomiyaki gave me the chance to explore flavors distinct from the Japanese cuisine I had tried in Korea. Strolling through the lively shops and restaurants, I caught a glimpse of the daily lives of Osaka’s residents. The warmth of the merchants of the local stores, including the udon restaurant, allowed me to experience Japan’s renowned hospitality comfortably firsthand. Revisiting Dotonbori and Namba during the day through the B&S program revealed yet another side of the area. In the daylight, the streets felt fresh and vibrant, contrasting with the dazzling nighttime scenes. My group members also introduced me to anime stores, which offered a fascinating look into Japan’s anime culture.

Through these visits, I realized the importance of understanding both the past history and the present aspects of a country. At Osaka Castle, I gained a deeper appreciation for Japan’s traditions and its enduring pride in heritage. Meanwhile, in Dotonbori Osaka, I was able to experience the everyday life of Japan, not just as a tourist destination, but also gain an understanding of the overall character of the city of Osaka. In addition, I experienced both the pride in Japanese tradition at Osaka Castle and the vibrant modern culture in Dotonbori.  Through these experiences, I gained an understanding of Japan's ability to balance its past and present while continuing to develop. I also had the opportunity to communicate with foreigners in various languages, including Japanese, English, and Korean, and sometimes even mixed them. It was satisfying when I achieved the desired results or solved problems this way. Through this, I feel I was able to enjoy the experiential learning program as a more independent and active participant.
