Oh Young-gue graduated from Yeungnam University and has taught students at Cheonggu Middle School in Daegu for 21 years since 2004. He has a keen interest in new cultures, educational methods, student exchange programs and continuously challenging himself for more enjoyable and engaging teaching IB MYP. He also wants to have 10 IB Learner’s profiles and improve international mindedness.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Vietnam in 1992, the trade volume between the two countries has steadily increased. In particular, the growth rate has accelerated significantly since 1995. The trade volume between South Korea and Vietnam was approximately $500 million in 1995, but it soared to about $18.5 billion in 2015, marking a 37-fold increase over 20 years. This remarkable growth has positioned Vietnam as South Korea's third-largest export market and trading partner. As a result, Vietnam has become a close neighboring country to South Korea.
On November 29th, 2024, Cheonggu Middle School, IB MYP World School in South Korea and Wellspring International Bilingual in Hanoi, Vietnam signed a sister school agreement. So, two schools will be able to do not only student exchange programs but teacher exchange programs to improve their international mindedness. Even before the agreement, Global Friends Club students at Cheonggu Middle School and high school students at Wellspring School have been doing the project which solves common problems using SDGs created by the U.N. They meet each other online using Zoom, form four groups, and assign each group a goal. Then, they collaborate to create solutions to common problems such as climate change and environmental pollution. Through this community project, they became close friends and have developed IB learner profiles. I’m sure if these kinds of projects under good management by teachers continue well, they will be strong bridges between the two countries. For the two schools’ teachers, they will be able to create Korean and Vietnamese camps every vacation. Korean teachers teach Vietnamese teachers Korean and Vietnamese teachers teach Korean teachers Vietnamese. I’m sure through this camp they could learn the different languages and build up rapport to understand other cultures.
As the globalization develops so quickly, our educators must let their students prepare for this phenomenon. For example, they should create some programs to solve common problems using online tools and offline collaboration activities for a better world. I think this agreement is a starting point and teachers at the two schools should create the happy journey to let their students join for a bright future. I’ll do my best to create this journey.
