After reading the book Choi Jae-hyung, The Forgotten Patriarch of the Independence Movement, I realized that it is not just a historical account, but one deeply connected to my own life. Choi Jae-hyung, through his life, exemplified how we should dedicate ourselves to our country and people. We must always remember that we exist today because of those who fought for our independence. However, it is a pity that figures like Choi Jae-hyung are being forgotten in  modern society.

I currently serve as a crew member on a submarine in the Republic of Korea Navy, and life aboard a submarine is a unique and isolated experience. I would like to connect the lessons from Choi Jae-hyung’s life with my own military service. Let me explore how Choi Jae-hyung’s dedication, courage, and sacrifices resonate with my life in the Navy.

Choi Jae-hyung’s life began in the late 19th century in Vladivostok, Russia. As someone with a dual identity, living between Korean and Russian societies, his background strengthened his vision for independence. His motivation to begin the independence movement was rooted in his love for the country and a strong will to protect it.

His first experience with the independence movement was through his involvement with various armed groups. Not only did he participate in armed struggles, but he also dedicated himself to nurturing future independence activists. Choi’s commitment reminds me of my time in the Navy training camp with my fellow recruits. We trained in an environment where we were taught to protect and help each other as a team, always aiming for victory together.

Choi Jae-hyung lived during a time when the identity of the Korean people was under constant threat. The pressure from Japanese imperialism was intense, and a heightened sense of national consciousness was more necessary than ever. His independence movement was not just a simple resistance but a representation of his deep reflection on preserving the identity of the Korean people. He acted under the belief that "without a nation, there is no individual."

My naval service shares similar values. In the unique environment of a submarine, camaraderie and teamwork are of utmost importance. I am constantly reminded that the position I hold today is not just a result of my individual choice. It is the outcome of the sweat and sacrifice of many predecessors and comrades. Defending our seas and safeguarding our country is not merely for personal gain but embodies the patriotic spirit of many compatriots.

Choi Jae-hyung joined the Korean Independence Army, opening the path to independence through armed struggle. What is noteworthy is that he didn’t just focus on combat; he understood the importance of solidarity and cooperation during the struggle. He built trust with his comrades and adjusted strategies to fight the enemy.

The leadership he demonstrated went beyond that of a mere commander; it became a source of power that unified people. Similarly, through life aboard a submarine, I have come to deeply appreciate the importance of cooperation. In the confined space of a submarine, trust in each other is essential.

Leadership in the Navy is not simply about giving orders; it’s about listening to and coordinating with team members to achieve common goals. Like Choi Jae-hyung, I realize that when we move forward with a united heart, we can overcome even the most difficult situations.

Additionally, Choi Jae-hyung worked through international conferences and diplomatic efforts to raise global awareness of Korea’s desire for independence. The international relationships he built were not just personal achievements but collective efforts aimed at Korean independence. His endeavors reflect the depth of his dedication to the independence movement.

Life aboard a submarine also reminds me of the importance of international cooperation. Through joint exercises and operational experiences with the navies of other countries, we learn the significance of working together. On the vast stage of the sea, the power of cooperation strengthens weak points, and all nations strive together to ensure safety, which aligns with the values Choi Jae-hyung held.

Personal sacrifice is an inseparable part of Choi Jae-hyung’s struggle. He experienced firsthand what he should give up for the sake of independence, and this clarified the path demanded by his country. Despite relentless hardships and adversity, his passion for independence never waned. His life was not shaped solely by personal choice.

The same applies to the Republic of Korea Navy. In the event of combat, we are prepared to sacrifice ourselves for the safety of our comrades. I believe this willingness to protect others is the true spirit of a submariner. Choi Jae-hyung’s life sharpens my sense of duty as a soldier, reinforcing the belief that, even in difficult times, we must stay the course.

He deeply understood the importance of national consciousness. His independence movement was not merely about reclaiming sovereignty but about finding and strengthening a sense of identity. This is something all Koreans should recognize and understand. Choi Jae-hyung demonstrated the responsibilities and roles of being a Korean through his actions.

As a submariner, I carry out this same sense of responsibility. Our mission is not only to maintain maritime security but also to protect the nation’s sovereignty and ensure the safety of its people. Choi Jae-hyung’s sense of national consciousness and responsibility resonates with the very purpose of the Navy.

Choi Jae-hyung’s life is not just a story of a past independence activist but offers many lessons for today. His actions remind us that history is shaped by ordinary individuals like him and that each of us has a historical role to play in our respective positions.

His story poses the question, "What am I fighting for?" Life aboard a submarine is not an easy path, but Choi Jae-hyung’s sacrifice and dedication remind me that I should not forget my sense of responsibility. The spirit of those who fought for our country transcends history and still inspires us even today, and I am determined to honor and practice that spirit.

Choi Jae-hyung’s life and independence movement are not just stories of the past. His spirit of dedication and sacrifice continues to have a profound impact on us today. As a submariner in the Navy, I felt a deep connection to his legacy, learning how individuals and nations can be intricately linked. Life aboard a submarine can be lonely and challenging, but through Choi Jae-hyung’s teachings, I have a clearer understanding of my responsibilities to our people and our country.

Like Choi Jae-hyung, we must all dedicate ourselves to our goals and the prosperity of our people. His story compels each of us to ponder on how we can contribute to history, and I pledge to keep this spirit alive as I move forward. My life in the Navy is not just for a job; it is for a true mission to defend my country. Choi Jae-hyung’s life is not merely history; it is the life of a soldier like me.
